Lumsden Hare
Biography
Lumsden Hare was an Irish-born American actor who worked in film and theater and also directed and produced for the stage. Born in County Tipperary, he studied at St. Dunstan's College in London. Between 1900 and 1942 he acted in more than 35 Broadway productions, starting with his 1908 debut in What Every Woman Knows, which starred Maude Adams, and he sometimes directed, as on Peter's Mother in 1918, or produced, as with Elmer Gantry in 1928 and a 1926 revival of What Every Woman Knows. His screen career began in 1916, and Mordaunt Hall, a critic for the New York Times, praised his performances repeatedly, singling out his work in Scotland Yard and Svengali (1931). During the 1940s he took small, often uncredited supporting parts for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. By his last screen appearance in 1961 he had over 140 film credits and had appeared in more than a dozen television productions.
