Plot summary
In eighteenth-century France, Fabien des Grieux has turned his back on the world to study for the priesthood. On the road he encounters Manon Lescaut, whom her brother André is taking to a convent. The Comte Guillot de Morfontaine, who desires her, offers André a sum of money for the girl, and when Fabien learns of the bargain he carries Manon off to Paris. The two of them pass a week together in a garret, and Fabien lays aside his priestly plans. André tracks his sister down and urges her to leave, pressing her toward Morfontaine, who has not abandoned his wish to have her.
