Plot summary
John Soames is a man of thirty who has never been conscious. A brain injury at birth left him comatose, and an operation on his brain finally revives him. His body is that of a grown man, but he behaves like an infant. Two doctors, Bergen and Maitland, take charge of him and monitor him, trying to find out how much of the adult world he can absorb. He has never learned to walk or talk, has met no women, and has had no schooling in morality. The doctors begin with the basics and prepare him for life in the outside world.
