Plot summary
In 1643, the Thirty Years' War has left south-central Germany in chaos. The Captain commands a mercenary company that fights for whoever pays, whatever their faith, and his soldiers loot the countryside as they march. Vogel, a former teacher, escapes the fighting and comes upon an idyllic mountain valley the war has not touched. He talks the Captain into sparing the village so the band can shelter there through the winter, while famine and plague spread outside. Gruber, the local headman, accepts the best terms he can get. The Catholic priest is furious that the company includes Protestants and unbelievers, but the Captain holds to the agreement. The villagers supply food and shelter, and Erica, Gruber's wife, is taken by the Captain.
