Plot summary
In 1911 the ship Lady Vain is wrecked in the Pacific, and one of the men in its lifeboat, the engineer Andrew Braddock, comes ashore on an island. There the scientist Dr. Moreau has him nursed back to health in his compound, where Moreau's associate Montgomery, his mute servant M'Ling and a young woman named Maria also live. Moreau treats Braddock as a guest and tells him not to leave the compound at night. The island's other inhabitants are hybrids, made from wild animals in Moreau's experiments.

- Barbara Carrera said three or four different endings were imagined, including one in which her character Maria gave birth to a kitten; producer John Temple-Smith favoured that version, Michael York flatly refused to do it, and the footage was never shot.
- The producers first planned to shoot the film in the Canary Islands or Malta, but chose the United States Virgin Islands after its Chamber of Commerce and its Governor Cyril E. King lobbied Sandy Howard.
- The fifteen actors who played the human-animal hybrids needed a team of 12 makeup artists, who took four hours to apply their cosmetics and one hour to remove them.
