Plot summary
Dr. John Watson writes the Sherlock Holmes stories for The Strand Magazine, keeping a secret: he is the detective, and Holmes is a fiction he invented so he could solve crimes without drawing attention to his medical career. When readers demand to see the famous detective, Watson hires Reginald Kincaid, a stage actor, to play the part. Kincaid drinks, and after a case in which he oversteps, Watson fires him and tries to write Holmes out in favor of a new character, the Crime Doctor. The reading public rejects the idea. The government then asks Holmes to investigate printing plates for five-pound notes stolen from a mint, and the printing supervisor has gone missing, so Watson has to find Kincaid, sober him up and take the case.
