Biography

Lloyd Kaufman is an American filmmaker, actor and author who, with producer Michael Herz, founded Troma Entertainment in 1974 and directed many of its features. Born in New York City and a Yale graduate, he made his first feature, The Girl Who Returned, in 1969, then worked for Cannon Films and collaborated with John G. Avildsen on low-budget pictures including Cry Uncle! (1971). He produced The Final Countdown and worked on major studio productions before Troma found mainstream success with the darkly comic superhero film The Toxic Avenger (1984) and, later, Tromeo and Juliet (1996). He directed Class of Nuke 'Em High with Richard W. Haines, made the musical zom-com Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead, and in 2013 premiered Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1, which the Museum of Modern Art selected for its Contenders series. He also writes books about independent filmmaking and appears in low-budget horror films.

A change of course
For Saturday Night Fever (1977), Kaufman was the executive in charge of locations. He also had a hand in selecting 2001 Odyssey to be the nightclub shown in the film.
A first
Kaufman found lost behind-the-scenes footage of Rocky that he had directed on Super-8, and it was set for the film's 40th anniversary Blu-ray and DVD release.
A change of course
After graduating, Kaufman took a job at Cannon Films. There he crossed paths with John G. Avildsen, and over the next few years the pair turned out low-budget movies such as Joe and Cry Uncle!.
A first
Kaufman's first digital directing job was Return to Nuke 'Em High: Vol. 1, made with Starz/Anchor Bay and Troma. It opened around the world, earning awards and critical praise.
