Plot summary
Clay Riddell, an artist, leaves his wife Sharon and son Johnny to publish a graphic novel. A year later he calls home from Boston International Airport with the news, then his battery dies and he uses a payphone. A signal spreads through mobile networks worldwide, and everyone on a cell phone becomes a rabid killer. Planes collide overhead, and Clay takes shelter in a subway station, where he meets train conductor Tom McCourt and other survivors. The power is out, the trains will not move, and the tunnels will flood, so the group walks out through them. Clay wants to go north to Maine to find Sharon and Johnny, and the survivors head into a changed New England, gathering what they need on the way.

- Eli Roth walked away from the adaptation over a difference of opinion with the studio about the story, saying: "I'm not really interested in doing the film this way. You guys go ahead and I'm going to make my own films." He called the parting with Bob and Harvey Weinstein friendly.
- The film moved through distributors for years. Clarius Entertainment acquired the rights in February 2015 and dropped the film after becoming Aviron Pictures, Saban Films later picked it up, and a planned world premiere at FrightFest in the Glasgow Film Festival was replaced at the last minute by Pandemic.
- Cell is the second film adaptation of a Stephen King story to co-star Cusack and Jackson, after the 2007 film 1408.
