Trailer

Plot summary

Watergate dominates the news in 1974, and Connie Lashley, a junior transcriber for the Nixon White House, has the sole recording of the 18½-minute gap in the president's tapes. It leaves her shaken, so she calls Paul Marrow, a New York Times reporter, and offers him a listen. They agree to meet at a roadside diner and drive on to the Silver Sands Motel, a faded seaside resort, to play the reel where nobody can hear it. The recorder Paul brought does not work. Hunting for another one brings them across the motel's one-eyed desk clerk, Jack, a commune of hippies on the beach that Barry leads, and Samuel and Lena, a married couple their senior whose tape machine they may borrow only by staying for dinner. To stay unnoticed, Connie and Paul introduce themselves as newlyweds.
