John Bloom

Biography

John Bloom, known as Joe Bob Briggs, is an American film critic, writer, actor, and horror host. Born in Dallas in 1953 and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, he studied English at Vanderbilt University, graduated in 1975, and wrote for the Dallas Times Herald and Texas Monthly. He created the Joe Bob Briggs persona for humorous reviews of exploitation and genre films. He co-wrote Evidence of Love, later adapted as A Killing in a Small Town. He hosted The Movie Channel's Joe Bob's Drive-in Theater from 1986 to 1996 and TNT's MonsterVision from 1996 to 2000. He also commented on The Daily Show. Shudder signed him for The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob Briggs in 2018. He appeared in the documentary Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore (2010), and in 2019 the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards named him Monster Kid of the Year; in 2023 he was inducted into its Monster Kid Hall of Fame.
