Biography
LisaGay Hamilton is an American actress whose work spans film, television, and theater. Born in Los Angeles and raised largely in Stony Brook, New York, she trained at New York University's Tisch Drama School and the Juilliard School. She became widely known for her role as Rebecca Washington on The Practice from 1997 to 2003. Her television work also includes Men of a Certain Age, House of Cards, Chance, and The First. On film, she appeared in 12 Monkeys (1995), Palookaville (1996), Jackie Brown (1997), Beloved (1998), True Crime (1999), The Truth About Charlie (2002), Nine Lives (2005), Honeydripper (2007), The Soloist (2009), Beastly (2011), and Vice (2018). In theater, she won an Obie for Valley Song and another for The Ohio State Murders. She also created and directed the documentary Beah: A Black Woman Speaks, which won a Peabody Award in 2005.

Behind the award
Hamilton took home a Peabody Award in 2005 for directing and creating Beah: A Black Woman Speaks, a 2003 documentary about pioneering black actress Beah Richards. The two women met on Beloved, and Hamilton recorded over 70 hours of talks.

Hamilton earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater from New York University's Tisch Drama School in 1985, then a master's in drama from The Juilliard School in 1989.
Behind the award
In 1995-96, Hamilton played a young South African singer who hopes to make it in Athol Fugard's Valley Song. Her work earned an Obie Award, the Clarence Derwent Award, and Ovation and Drama Desk nominations.

Hamilton's early notable parts included a New York Shakespeare Festival production of Measure for Measure, where Kevin Kline was her fellow cast member.
