Kimberly Elise
Biography
Kimberly Elise is an American actress born in Minneapolis. She earned a mass communications degree at the University of Minnesota and was a directing fellow at the American Film Institute before making her first feature appearance in Set It Off (1996). Her work in Beloved (1998), based on Toni Morrison's novel, won critical praise, a Satellite Award for best supporting actress, and a most promising actress prize from Chicago critics. She appeared with Denzel Washington in John Q (2002), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), and The Great Debaters (2007). For Diary of a Mad Black Woman (2005) and For Colored Girls (2010), she received NAACP Image Awards. Her other films include Dope (2015), Almost Christmas (2016), Death Wish (2018), and Ad Astra (2019). On television, she led Close to Home and Hit the Floor, starred in Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009), and has won four NAACP Image Awards in all.
