Plot summary
Sethe, a former slave, lives on the outskirts of Cincinnati shortly after the Civil War with her daughter Denver. An angry spirit in the house once drove two of her other children away, and it still rattles the place. Paul D, a man she knew at Sweet Home, the plantation she escaped, finds her home eight years on and drives the spirit out; he asks to stay, and she agrees. Not long after he moves in, a young woman named Beloved walks into the yard, speaking and walking awkwardly, and Sethe takes her in. Denver is glad of the company at first.

- When Winfrey learned the film was projected to underperform on its opening weekend, she said she went into a tailspin and asked her personal chef to make macaroni and cheese, of which she ended up eating about thirty pounds worth, calling it the only time in her life she was ever depressed.
- Director Demme said Beloved played in theaters for only four weeks despite making $22 million and doing very well in a number of situations, because the Walt Disney company wanted those theaters for Adam Sandler's Waterboy; the promised return at the end of the year never happened.
- Akosua Busia demanded sole screenplay credit, saying Adam Brooks and Richard LaGravenese got too much and that all three were little more than script doctors; the WGA gave credit to all three of them.
- Winfrey purchased the rights to the novel in 1987, before Morrison's receipt of the Pulitzer Prize for Beloved, and the translation to film then occurred only a decade later.
