Plot summary
Regina Lambert, newly married and living in Paris, returns from a holiday in Martinique with her mind made up to end her marriage to Charlie. At the apartment she finds the French police: the rooms have been stripped, Charlie has been killed, and the money he raised by selling off their belongings is gone. On holiday she had met a charming stranger, Joshua, who turns up in Paris and offers to help her work out the truth about Charlie and to contend with the threatening people now trailing her. Another stranger also offers assistance, and she cannot tell which of the men she should trust.

- Charade screenwriter Peter Stone had to be credited on Jonathan Demme's remake, but he felt uncomfortable since he had not been involved, so he took the pseudonym Peter Joshua, an alias used by Cary Grant's character in the 1963 original.
- The film is an homage to François Truffaut's Shoot the Piano Player, and the French singer Charles Aznavour appears twice singing his own song "Quand tu m'aimes", first in French, later in English.
- Jonathan Demme, whose unorthodox approach was inspired by the French New Wave, wanted Universal to use the tagline "When in doubt, laugh" on promotional materials for The Truth About Charlie, but the studio rejected it.
