Plot summary
Nathaniel Ayers plays a two-string violin on a Los Angeles street, a man with schizophrenia who once studied at Juilliard and no longer has a cello. Steve Lopez, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, is divorced from Mary, an editor at the paper, and is short of story ideas when a bike accident puts him in the hospital. Back outside, he hears the violin and introduces himself. Ayers says he attended Juilliard; the school has no record of him graduating, and Lopez learns he dropped out after two years. Ayers' sister tells Lopez that her brother was a child prodigy on the cello before the symptoms of schizophrenia appeared, and Lopez decides to write his story.
