Jonathan McQuarry travels between Manhattan offices to audit company books. Working late at a law firm one night, he is befriended by a lawyer, Wyatt Bose. Their cell phones are switched, and Jonathan answers a call from a woman asking whether he is free that evening. They meet at a hotel bar and go to a room. Jonathan realizes Wyatt belongs to The List, a club whose members meet anonymously in hotels. An older member tells him the rules: the caller pays for the room, and no names are exchanged.
