Plot summary
In 1964, three Mississippi civil rights activists vanish, and federal supervisor Roy K. Moore presses regional agents for answers, sending Brooklyn mob enforcer Greg Scarpa south to help. Two years later in Hattiesburg, Vernon Dahmer helps Black residents register to vote; Klansmen firebomb his home at midnight and he dies the next morning. A young Black FBI agent, Wayne Strider, moves south with his wife Allison and is put in charge of the investigation. Local residents refuse to be interviewed, fearing the deputies. Moore assigns Scarpa as Strider's partner. Strider believes courtrooms deliver justice; Scarpa ignores the rules and uses threats to force compliance, and the two travel rural towns hunting Klan operatives.
