Plot summary
Curtis LaForche works in construction in LaGrange, Ohio. He and his wife Samantha are raising Hannah, their daughter, who is deaf. Apocalyptic dreams and hallucinations trouble him: rain the color of motor oil, menacing black birds, harm at the hands of people close to him. His mother, Sarah, has paranoid schizophrenia, which appeared when she was about his age, and he fears he may have the same disorder. Sleepless, he visits a counselor at a free clinic and speaks about his family's psychological history. He becomes fixated on the storm shelter in the yard, borrowing his employer's heavy equipment and taking out a home improvement loan for the work, without telling Samantha.

SPOILER
Nichols said that whether the final vision is a dream or real does not matter; what counts is that the two characters look at each other and connect, both seeing it, so that a film about marriage, commitment and communication ends with them on the same page again.
