Lionel Atwill
Biography
Lionel Atwill was an English-born actor who worked on stage and screen in Britain and the United States. Born in Croydon, London, in 1885, he studied architecture prior to a 1904 stage debut at the Garrick Theatre in London. He became a Broadway star by 1918 and made his screen debut the following year. After stage work in Australia, he entered Hollywood horror in the 1930s. He took leads in Doctor X (1932), The Vampire Bat (1933) and Mystery of the Wax Museum (1933), and he was most memorable as Inspector Krogh, the one-armed officer in Son of Frankenstein (1939), a part Kenneth Mars later parodied in Young Frankenstein. He appeared in four more Universal Frankenstein films and many other chillers. His other credits included Captain Blood (1935), The Devil Is a Woman (1935), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1939), Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon (1942) and the comedy To Be or Not to Be (1942).
