Plot summary
Tommy Layton is a wealthy bachelor who hires a city bus to carry him from Chicago to Los Angeles so he can sail his yacht in a race to Hawai'i. The bus company sends a detective after its drivers, Algy and Wellington, when the two men take the bus. Cornered at a fishing pier, they put the vehicle over the edge and end up in the water, where Layton fishes them out and signs them as his crew. Joan Marshall, a rival in the race, has dismissed his original crew without telling him, so he abducts her and carries her along. A typhoon drives the yacht to an island that appears on no chart, the home of an archaeologist named Varnoff.
