Lionel Belmore
Biography
Lionel Belmore was an English character actor and director who spent more than a quarter of a century on the stage. Born in Wimbledon in 1867, he performed alongside Wilson Barrett, Henry Irving, William Faversham and Lily Langtry before he began appearing in films in 1911. He was unusual in that he directed before he became a prolific actor, making films from 1914 to 1920 while taking only a limited number of acting roles, then concentrating on performing from that point on. He accumulated roughly 200 screen titles and played bit parts in several classics of the 1930s. He was notable as Herr Vogel, the Burgomaster, in Frankenstein (1931). He died in 1953.
