Plot summary
Kurt Ingston is a recluse who uses a wheelchair and lives in a mansion beside a swampy region. He has invited the three physicians who were treating him when the paralysis began. The household includes Rolf, a grim-humored butler; Laurie, a lecherous chauffeur; Miss Judd, a mannish housekeeper; Agar Singh, an Eastern mystic; and Margaret, Ingston's sister, who is said to be mentally ill. A hunchback named Torque watches the gate. Dr. Lynne Harper, a psychiatrist, was summoned in secret by Margaret, who wants proof of her sanity and freedom from Ingston and Miss Judd. Dick Baldwin, a mystery writer and neighbor, rescued her after the car broke down in the swamp, and he brings her to the house. Ingston and Miss Judd do not welcome her, but she must stay until the car is repaired.
