Plot summary
Irene von Helldorf is spending her twenty-first birthday at the family's rural manor in Germany, with her father Robert among those present. Her suitor Thomas Brandt is there, along with Thomas's two rivals, Walter Brink and Frank Faber. A locked room in the house, the blue room, is said to be cursed: nobody who has passed a night inside has lived long afterward. Years before, several murders happened there, all at one hour past midnight. Robert's sister was the first victim, then his closest friend, then a detective who had come to look into the two deaths. Thomas proposes a wager: he, Walter and Frank will each spend a night in the room.
