Plot summary

Under the name Baron Latos, a visitor arrives at Dr. Franz Edelmann's castle and asks the doctor to cure his vampirism. The visitor is Count Dracula, and Edelmann, who works with his nurse Miliza and his hunchbacked assistant Nina, agrees to attempt a series of blood transfusions using his own blood. The count has his coffin moved into the castle basement. Lawrence Talbot then arrives seeking relief from his lycanthropy. Knowing the moon is rising, he has himself locked up, and Inspector Holtz brings Edelmann to witness the change. Edelmann believes pressure on the brain, not moonlight, causes it, and wants spores from a plant he thinks can relieve the pressure.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about House of Dracula (1945)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • A scene in which Glenn Strange rose from quicksand was difficult for the actor, who recalled it was extremely cold; Chaney offered him alcohol that warmed him up, and afterwards Strange said he was "so looped I could hardly get up".
  • The film was developed initially as Wolf Man vs. Dracula, to be directed by Ford Beebe with Bela Lugosi reprising Count Dracula, but after Boris Karloff returned for a two-film deal with Universal and several requests from the censorship board, it was put on hold for nearly six months.
  • According to Malvern the budget for sets was $5,000, and to save on lumber and nails for the war effort, existing props and sets from films such as The Invisible Woman and The Mummy's Hand were reused.
  • House of Dracula was the final time make-up artist Jack Pierce would create the make-up for the Wolf Man, Dracula and Frankenstein's monster, as Universal released him in 1947.
  • Asked why Lugosi did not appear, Malvern said he was probably working at a different studio, but film historian Gregory William Mank said Lugosi was just completing Genius at Work (1946) and would have had time to join the cast; Carradine played Dracula instead.
  • During the rewrites, someone in production sent a memo to Lowe saying they "did not like the title Destiny and it should be more like the previous monster films - like House of Frankenstein - how about changing the name to House of Dracula?"
