Plot summary
The nursing home in Oregon takes in a new resident, Henry Manning, who arrives from prison immobile and mute. The stroke that put him there is his own invention: after decades as a professional thief, he chooses a nursing home over a cell and studies ways to imitate a stroke's symptoms. Carol Ann McKay, the nurse who looks after him, was her high school's prom queen and is married to Wayne, the prom king and the football team's star, who still cleans up after the ideas she gets them into. Carol Ann knows his record as a robber, and the police never caught him in thirty years. Henry's plan needs nobody watching him closely.

- This was Paul Newman's second-to-last live-action theatrical release, though he kept working in voice-over and television for years afterwards. For Linda Fiorentino it was the end of the line: she has never had another film released in cinemas.
