Plot summary
In 1926 Paris, Nick Hart lives among the expatriate writers and artists of the Lost Generation, among them Ernest Hemingway, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. The American painter spends his days drinking and socializing in cafés and asking gallery owner Libby Valentin to sell his work. Nathalie de Ville, a wealthy art patroness, hires him to forge three paintings, and the task brings him into repeated conflict with Bertram Stone, an American rubber magnate now married to Nick's ex-wife Rachel. Stone does not know that Rachel is still married to another man. Nick is pulled between Rachel and Nathalie.
