Plot summary

Prominent San Francisco businessman Kyle Medford is found dead in his home, his body skinned, an antique hatchet at the scene. Assistant District Attorney David Corelli takes the case. Detectives find photographs in a safe at Medford's home showing Governor Lew Edwards with a woman later identified as Patrice Jacinto. She tells them that Medford paid her and other women to have sex with wealthy clients at his beach house in Pacifica, and that the most sought-after of them went by the name Jade. Edwards and his aide Bill Barrett warn Corelli to keep the photographs out of circulation, and someone cuts the brake line on Corelli's car. Prints on the hatchet belong to Katrina Gavin, a clinical psychologist, his former lover and the wife of his friend, defense attorney Matt Gavin.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Jade (1995)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas says director William Friedkin rewrote his script so extensively that he threatened to take his name off the credits; Paramount reportedly settled the dispute by giving him a 'blind script deal' worth two to four million dollars for a future project.
  • Warren Beatty was the first choice for the lead role of David Corelli but turned it down; David Caruso, fresh off a sudden, well-publicized departure from NYPD Blue, accepted the part hoping it would launch a film career.
  • Kenneth Branagh was offered the role of Matt Gavin before Chazz Palminteri took it, while Julia Roberts and Sharon Stone both turned down Katrina Gavin; Linda Fiorentino also initially refused the part because she did not want to play a prostitute, changing her mind only after rewrites altered the character.
  • One of the film's props, a naked male figure sliced and cut up, later turned up in the background of MythBusters' second season: cohost Jamie Hyneman, who worked with special effects leader Chris Walas, kept it, and the crew covered its groin and added a t-shirt to make it TV-ready, Adam Savage said.
  • Jade earned two Golden Raspberry nominations, for Worst Screenplay and Worst New Star (David Caruso), and lost both to Showgirls, a film written by the same screenwriter, Joe Eszterhas.
