Plot summary
A nuclear exchange between the United States and China has left the northern hemisphere contaminated, and Australia waits for the fallout to drift south. The submarine USS Charleston, commanded by Dwight Towers, reaches Melbourne, where the Australians regard its crew with disdain. Towers puts his vessel under the Royal Australian Navy. An automated digital broadcast from Alaska draws attention, and Towers is ordered to take the Charleston north, with the Australian scientist Julian Osborne and the liaison officer Peter Holmes aboard. Australia's leading scientist has calculated that the country is doomed, while a rival holds that radiation levels farther north may be lower and that a thousand people could be relocated there; the voyage is meant to settle which of them is right.
