Plot summary

In 2006, Brooklyn congressman David Norris loses his bid for a Senate seat. Rehearsing his concession remarks in a men's bathroom, he meets Elise Sellas, who has crashed a wedding and is hiding there; she has overheard him, and they kiss. She is gone before he learns her name, and the encounter shapes the candid speech he delivers. A month later, Harry Mitchell is assigned to make David miss his bus by spilling coffee on him, but he falls asleep, and David takes it, meeting Elise again and getting her number. Arriving early at work, David finds his coworkers frozen and strangers examining them. He is subdued and taken to a warehouse, where Richardson tells him about the Adjustment Bureau and the Plan, destroys the card with Elise's number, and warns him to stay silent.

  • The release was pushed back twice, first from July 30, 2010 to September 17 and then to March 4, 2011, because Damon had to promote his two other films, True Grit and Hereafter.
  • In early drafts of the script the character of Norris was changed from a real-estate salesman, as in Philip K. Dick's short story, to an up-and-coming U.S. Congressman.
