Plot summary
On Christmas Eve, Philip runs Lifesavers, a suicide-prevention hotline in Venice, Los Angeles. Mrs. Munchnik, a judgmental widow, and Catherine, who has a crush on Philip, share the shift. Gracie, pregnant and angry, chases her boyfriend Felix, an ex-con, along the road; he collides with a Christmas tree that two rollerbladers are carrying, and Philip takes the damaged tree to the office. Philip's landlord, Stanley, intends to convert the building into condominiums. He hides the eviction notice from his coworkers and asks his fiancée Susan, a loan officer, for money to keep the hotline open; she refuses and breaks up with him. Calls come in from a woman frightened of the Seaside Strangler and from Chris, a depressed transgender woman who asks to visit the office herself.
