Plot summary
Sonny Koufax is 32 and has never taken the bar exam. He lives on money from a minor accident and works at a toll booth one day a week, which frustrates his girlfriend, Vanessa, until she tells him he must change. His roommate, Kevin Gerrity, a lawyer, proposes to Corinne, a podiatrist, and leaves for a work trip to China. The next morning Sonny finds Julian McGrath, age five, in the apartment; a note says the boy's mother, Jan, is too ill to care for him and that Kevin is his father. Sonny reaches Kevin and says he will look after Julian until Kevin comes home. He introduces the boy to Vanessa, hoping to impress her, but she says she is seeing Sid now. Sonny, with no experience of children, finds the job harder than he expected.
