Plot summary
Willie Boy is a Chemehuevi and Paiute man in Banning, California, who means to take Lola as his wife. Her father refuses the match, and a confrontation between the two men ends with the father shot dead in self-defense. Tribal custom would allow Willie Boy to claim Lola, but the law sees murder, and Deputy Sheriff Christopher Cooper has to charge him with it. The pair flee into the desert, and Cooper leads a posse in pursuit through the Morongo Valley. The posse hunts them for several days. Their flight in 1909 becomes the last famous manhunt of the American West.

- The film was written and directed by Abraham Polonsky, his first directing credit since Force of Evil in 1948, because he had been blacklisted in Hollywood.
SPOILER
The real woman behind Lola, named Carlota, was found shot in the back in The Pipes area of northwest Yucca Valley; a 1994 book on her autopsy proved the bullet came from a long distance, implicating the posse rather than Willie Boy.SPOILER
The posse claimed the real Willie Boy shot himself on Ruby Mountain, but Native American accounts hold he escaped to Las Vegas and died of tuberculosis; the posse burned the body, making identification problematic.- Willie Boy's grave monument bears the inscription "The West's Last Famous Manhunt", alluding to this being the last effort of its type before posses were generally replaced by modern law enforcement agencies.
