Plot summary
The milk industry tycoon Aristote Alplanalpe takes Miss Canada as his bride after she wins a contest of the most virgin. On their honeymoon he sanitizes her with isopropyl alcohol and urinates on her from a penis painted gold, and she tells her mother-in-law that she means to leave. The family bodyguard, Jeremiah Muscle, takes her away and shuts her in a trunk headed for Paris, where she meets the Latin singer El Macho on the Eiffel Tower. In the canals of Amsterdam, Captain Anna Planeta pilots a candy-filled boat with a papier-mâché head of Karl Marx at its prow. She takes the hitchhiking sailor Potemkin aboard, and he ignores her warnings to leave.

- Sweet Movie was meant to follow only Miss Canada, but Carole Laure, who played her, walked off the production, disgusted by what the part required; she quit after shooting a scene in which she fondled a man's penis on-screen. Dušan Makavejev then rewrote the script to add the second narrative, starring Anna Prucnal.
- Polish authorities barred Anna Prucnal, a Warsaw-born Polish citizen, from using her passport because of her part in Sweet Movie, keeping her out of Poland for several years. The film was banned in many countries, including the United Kingdom, where the British Board of Film Classification judged it "unsuitable for classification".
- Sweet Movie drew controversy for scenes of coprophilia, emetophilia and implied child molestation, and for including footage of real-life remains of the victims of the Polish Katyn Massacre.
- Dušan Makavejev said that after making Sweet Movie it was as if he had burned all his bridges, and that he lost the chance to talk to producers.
- Sweet Movie: Poems, an ekphrasis of the film by poet Alisha Dietzman, won the 2022 National Poetry Series.
