Plot summary

Hélène works as a designer in her family's confectionery shop in occupied Paris, restless in a conventional engagement to Paul. She contrives to meet Jean Blomart, who grew up in a privileged middle-class home, joined the Communist Party out of guilt over his comfortable life, broke with his family, and later moved to trade union work. He turns her away at first; after a reckless affair and an abortion she and Jean become lovers, and he proposes, saying he loves her although he believes he does not. Jean works with the Resistance, and the German administrator Bergmann pursues Hélène, set on winning her affection.
