Plot summary
Ben Larkin, an American mobster, is held in Britain awaiting extradition to the United States. The Chicago police send Lieutenant Jim Brannigan to London to collect him, and Detective-Sergeant Jennifer Thatcher is assigned to assist him while he is in the city. Kidnappers seize Larkin before Brannigan can take custody of him. A finger cut from the mobster is mailed to the police as proof of how serious the kidnappers are. Mel Fields, Larkin's lawyer, tries to arrange a ransom drop, and Brannigan travels across London looking for him. He has to get used to British customs and to the restrained methods of his counterparts, and Commander Charles Swann of the Metropolitan Police objects to Brannigan carrying and using his .38 caliber revolver.

- John Wayne had turned down the starring role in Dirty Harry, and after that film's success he made two police thrillers, McQ in 1974 and Brannigan in 1975.
- Brannigan was filmed in London and at Shepperton Studios during 1974 and, along with The Quiet Man, is the only John Wayne film not produced in the United States.
- In Brannigan's car chase, the detective jumps a yellow Ford Capri coupé across the half-raised Tower Bridge; the jump was accomplished using scale models of both the bridge and the car.
- The film contains footage of the inside of the Garrick Club, which traditionally does not allow cameras and was only agreed to because Richard Attenborough was a long-term member.
- The parts of Swann and Thatcher were originally intended for Ralph Richardson and Diana Rigg; Richardson reportedly dropped out at the last minute and was quoted saying John Wayne should try the works of Shakespeare.
