Plot summary
Emil Vaslovik, a Nobel laureate, conceived Project Questor to build a superhuman android, then vanished. A group of experts assembles the machine from the components he left, following his instructions without understanding them. Decoding his programming tape wipes out about half of what it held. Jerry Robinson, the one person on the team who had worked with Vaslovik, objects when the head of the project orders their own programming substituted, and he is overruled. The replacement tape produces no response, so what survives of Vaslovik's tape is loaded, and again nothing happens. Alone in the laboratory, the android becomes active, smooths features onto its blank skin, and leaves for Vaslovik's office and archives. There it calls itself part of Project Questor, then forces Robinson to help it search for its maker, with the project's head in pursuit.

- NBC picked up The Questor Tapes as a series for Friday nights at 10 p.m., the "death slot" where Star Trek's final season had withered. Conflict with Universal and NBC over ignoring the film's final revelation and cutting the character Jerry Robinson made Gene Roddenberry abandon it, so no episodes were produced.
- Leonard Nimoy was originally asked to play the android Questor and posed in makeup for production photos, agreeing to do a weekly series if it was picked up, but Gene Roddenberry hired Robert Foxworth for the part instead.
- Rod Roddenberry confirmed that the Questor android inspired Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Questor's trick of detecting loaded dice in a London casino scene was repeated by Data in the second-season episode "The Royale".
- Some of Gil Mellé's music for The Questor Tapes was later repurposed as the theme music for the TV series Kolchak: The Night Stalker; both were developed at and produced out of Universal Studios.
