Plot summary
Claude Chavasse is a private detective in Paris who specializes in tracking unfaithful spouses. His client Monsieur X receives proof that his wife has been meeting Frank Flannagan, an American business magnate, in Suite 14 of the Ritz, and vows to shoot Flannagan that night. Ariane, Claude's daughter, a cello student, hears the threat. The Ritz will not connect her telephone call to Flannagan and the police decline to intervene before a crime has been committed, so she goes to the hotel and sneaks into the suite, where she finds him dancing with Madame X, and warns them. Monsieur X breaks in, searches the room while Madame X leaves by the ledge, then apologizes for the misunderstanding. Flannagan becomes intrigued by the girl who gives no name.

- Wilder's first choices for Frank Flannagan were Cary Grant and Yul Brynner. Wilder later recalled that it was a disappointment to him that Grant never said yes to any picture he offered him, and that Grant never explained why.
- To cover over Cooper's performance and to obscure the lines and age in Cooper's face, Wilder photographed the actor in shadow and with gauzy filters, and the camera was also often positioned behind Cooper's back.
SPOILER
For the American release, Chevalier recorded an end-of-film narration to let audiences know that Ariane and Flannagan had married and were living in New York City; Wilder objected to the addition but was forced to include it to forestall complaints that their relationship was immoral.
