Biography
Audrey Hepburn was a British actress who trained in ballet in Amsterdam and London before becoming a chorus girl in West End musicals. After minor film roles, she broke through in Roman Holiday (1953) opposite Gregory Peck, winning an Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for the same performance, plus a Tony Award that year for Ondine. She starred in Sabrina (1954), Funny Face (1957), The Nun's Story (1959), Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961), Charade (1963), and My Fair Lady (1964). Wait Until Dark (1967) earned her Academy, Golden Globe, and BAFTA nominations, and she acted only occasionally afterward, including Robin and Marian (1976) and Always (1989). Her honors included three BAFTA Awards for Best British Actress, a BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award, two Golden Globes, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award. A Primetime Emmy came for Gardens of the World with Audrey Hepburn, and a spoken word album later earned a posthumous Grammy.

A first
Hepburn became a star after appearing with Gregory Peck in the 1953 romantic comedy Roman Holiday. Her work in that film made her the first actress to earn an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a BAFTA Award for one performance.
Big break
Hepburn's screen test for Secret People, arranged by director Thorold Dickinson, so impressed William Wyler that he cast her in Roman Holiday over Elizabeth Taylor, who the producers had wanted.
First role
Hepburn made her film debut in Dutch in Seven Lessons, a 1948 educational travel film, playing an air stewardess. Charles van der Linden and Henry Josephson made the film.
About the name
After moving to London that year for a ballet scholarship with Ballet Rambert, then based in Notting Hill, Hepburn supported herself with part-time modeling and dropped "Ruston" from her surname.
Getting ready for a role
Hepburn, though not a singer, had sung in Funny Face and prepared her voice at length for My Fair Lady, but Marni Nixon dubbed her vocals because Nixon's voice suited the role better. Hepburn walked off the set when told.
