We Remember Marilyn (1996) on Netflix

Plot summary

A woman's voice speaks for Marilyn Monroe as photographs, home movies, film clips, trailers and newsreel footage carry her story. She grew up near Hollywood as Norma Jean, with her mother entering and leaving institutions, her father unknown to her, and her childhood divided between foster homes and relatives. Modeling came first, and her screen work gathered slowly. Gentlemen Prefer Blonds made her a star, though the studio still paid her 500 dollars a week. She resented the parts she was typed into and sought out independent productions, and she kept an acting coach near because of stage fright. Her marriages, the pills and the drinking gave her little ease, while crowds of cheering soldiers were where she seemed most content.
