Plot summary
Momo, a girl of mysterious origin, lives in the ruins of an amphitheater just outside an unnamed Italian city. Her gift is listening: by being with people and hearing them out, she helps her neighbors find answers, settle quarrels and invent games, and the neighborhood gathers around her. Then the Men in Grey appear, representing a Timesavings Bank. They urge the townspeople to save time, which the bank holds and returns later with interest. The people accept, and the more they save, the less time they have; what they deposit is consumed by the Men in Grey. Against that scheme stands Momo, whose way with people the bank cannot account for.
