Montgomery Clift

Biography

Montgomery Clift was an American actor who earned four Academy Award nominations and became known for playing moody, sensitive young men. Born in Omaha, Nebraska, he started on Broadway as a teenager and created the part of Henry in The Skin of Our Teeth. His first Hollywood role came opposite John Wayne in Red River (1948), while The Search (1948) brought his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Clift was among the original method actors and was among the first actors invited to study at the Actors Studio. A Place in the Sun (1951) earned another nomination, and From Here to Eternity (1953) a third. He later took a supporting role in The Misfits (1961); his cameo in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961) brought a fourth nomination. He then turned to voice work, recording The Glass Menagerie and giving voice to William Faulkner's writings for television. In 1960 he received a star on Hollywood Boulevard, and he died in 1966.

Clift was among the first actors asked to study at the Actors Studio, where Lee Strasberg and Elia Kazan were teachers.
First role
Clift's first Hollywood film role came at age 25 opposite John Wayne in Red River, after Howard Hawks was impressed by his stage work and signed him without a long-term contract.
Getting ready for a role
For his role as boxer Robert E. Lee Prewitt in From Here to Eternity, Clift trained by jogging around Hollywood High School, learning boxing from Mushy Callahan and James Jones, and imitating bugle playing with trumpeter Mannie Klein.
A first
In 1939, Clift was in the Broadway cast of Noël Coward's Hay Fever. That performance was carried by NBC's New York station W2XBS, one of the earliest television broadcasts in the United States, during the New York World's Fair.
