Joan Bennett
Biography
Joan Bennett was an American actress of stage, screen and television, one of three acting sisters in a show business family. Born in Palisades Park, New Jersey, in 1910, she made her stage debut at 18 opposite her father, becoming a movie star within two years through roles such as Disraeli (1929) and Amy March in Little Women (1933). After changing her hair from blonde to brunette she took on seductive femme fatale parts, above all in Fritz Lang's Man Hunt (1941), The Woman in the Window (1944) and Scarlet Street (1945). She then moved to warm wife and mother roles in the Vincente Minnelli comedies Father of the Bride (1950) and Father's Little Dividend (1951). She kept working in theater and television, spending five years on the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows, which earned her an Emmy nomination in 1968, and her final film part, as Madame Blanc in Suspiria (1977), brought a Saturn Award nomination.

A role that slipped away
David O. Selznick asked Bennett to test for Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind. She spent several weeks working on a Southern accent with dialogue director Bill Price, and her three scenes impressed Selznick enough that she was one of four actresses tested in color.
A role that slipped away
Bennett took over the title role in Fritz Lang's The Woman in the Window after Merle Oberon left it, and she also accepted Oberon's vacated part in the musical Nob Hill.
Behind the camera
Bennett joined with Walter Wanger and Fritz Lang to start Diana Productions, an independent company. Scarlet Street, which came out in 1945, was its first release and became another box-office hit.
Getting ready for a role
For her first Fritz Lang film, Man Hunt, Bennett played a Cockney woman and practiced the accent for weeks with English actress Queenie Leonard.
