Plot summary
Stanley T. Banks, a middle-aged lawyer, learns over dinner that his daughter Kay has accepted a proposal from Buckley. Ellie, Kay's mother, begins to plan, while Stanley cannot sleep for worry about what the marriage holds. His doubts trouble Ellie too. Stanley wants a talk about money with Buckley, who spends the visit talking about himself. Ellie tells Stanley afterward that Buckley runs his own small company and can support Kay. Then the Bankses meet Buckley's parents, Doris and Herbert Dunstan. That first evening is stiff at the start, livens up, and closes with Stanley, having drunk too much, asleep on their couch.

- Spencer Tracy turned down Father of the Bride when he heard another actor was being tested, so Vincente Minnelli had Katharine Hepburn invite him to a dinner party, where the director talked him into taking the part.
- Tracy wanted Katharine Hepburn as his screen wife, but the pair were judged too romantic a team to play a happily domesticated couple with children, so Joan Bennett, who had appeared with both of them in 1930s films, got the role.
- The original negative of Father of the Bride was destroyed in a 1978 fire, and every home media release since has been taken from a fine grain master positive.
