Plot summary
In 1874 the House of Commons votes down Benjamin Disraeli's plan to extend the British empire, after a speech by William Gladstone. The Khedive of Egypt needs money and will sell his controlling shares in the Suez Canal, which would secure British control of India. Michael Probert of the Bank of England opposes the purchase, so Disraeli sends for the banker Hugh Myers. Lady Clarissa Pevensey turns down Lord Charles Deeford, who has wealth and standing but no ambition. Disraeli brings Charles into his service. Russian agents Mrs. Travers and Mr. Foljambe watch Disraeli's moves.

- George Arliss won the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, becoming the first British actor to win, the first actor to win for a remake, and the first to win for reprising a movie role.
- The Green Goddess was filmed in 1929 and finished before Disraeli, yet it was held out of release until 1930 at George Arliss's request, because he thought Disraeli was the better vehicle for his talkie debut.
- Disraeli survives only in its 1934 re-release form, converted from sound-on-disc to sound-on-film, with the image cropped on the left; about three minutes of pre-Code footage was deleted and is believed lost.
