Plot summary
John Müller organizes a holdup at an illegal gambling house run by Rocky Stansyck. The robbery fails, and Stansyck's men make the crew members they catch name the others. Because Stansyck is reported to pursue his enemies until he finds them, Müller chooses to go into hiding. His brother Frederick, who lives an honest life, arranges an office job for him, but Müller quickly loses interest in earning a living. A dentist, Dr. Swangron, points out that Müller resembles a psychoanalyst in the same building, Dr. Bartok. Müller lets himself into Bartok's office to read his records, and Evelyn Hahn, the secretary, greets him with a kiss, taking him for her employer. He talks her into going out with him, though she claims she has given up on love.
