Plot summary
Tom Harper is away on business while his wife Lucia and their children stay at Balboa Island. Lucia drives to Los Angeles to tell Ted Darby, a criminal, to stop seeing her seventeen-year-old daughter Bea. That evening Bea slips out to the family boathouse to meet Darby; the next morning Lucia finds him lying dead by the jetty and takes a motorboat out to sink the body in a swamp. Once it is found and a murder investigation opens, Martin Donnelly, the partner of a loan shark called Nagel, comes to her with letters Bea had written to Darby, which Nagel held as collateral on a debt. Donnelly wants $5,000 to keep the letters from becoming public, and Lucia, who does not have the money, begins pawning her jewelry.
