Plot summary

On safari in the Kenya Colony of British East Africa, Francis and Margaret Macomber hire the English big-game hunter Robert Wilson as their guide. The Macombers' marriage is an unhappy one, and Francis, a wealthy man, hopes the expedition will bring the couple closer. He proves unsteady in the hunt: he wounds a lion, and when the animal charges he runs while Wilson finishes it off. Robert insists that the wounded animal be tracked and killed so that it will not suffer. Margaret is deeply embarrassed by her husband and denigrates him for his cowardice, and her regard turns to Wilson.
