Biography

Marietta Canty was an American actress whose Hollywood career spanned from 1940 to 1955. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, she made her Broadway debut in 1933 before moving into film. She appeared in 40 movies, usually in small supporting parts, and she was frequently cast as a household maid, a common assignment for African-American actresses of her era. One of her earlier screen credits, The Spoilers (1942), starred Marlene Dietrich in the lead. Canty became best known as Delilah, the housemaid to Spencer Tracy's character, in Father of the Bride (1950), and played the part again in Father's Little Dividend (1951). Her final Hollywood film was Rebel Without a Cause (1955), in which she played the family maid for Sal Mineo's character.
