Plot summary
Bill Campbell has made his name as a banker in the city, but his younger sister Marci still lives in Buzzsaw, the logging town they grew up in. Marci telephones him in a panic: she believes she watched their stepfather, Mayor Van Der Haven, die. Bill drives back to check whether she is right. He never gets there with his belongings intact, because a woman named Sally relieves him of his car, his clothes and a business document. He hitches a ride with two brothers, both named Jim, and reaches Buzzsaw with nothing. The document matters to his work, so he sets out to find Sally, and at the same time he tries to work out what happened to the mayor.

- Out on a Limb was first announced in February 1989 as Welcome to Buzzsaw, with Todd Holland set to make his feature directorial debut and Val Kilmer and Julia Roberts set to star. Kilmer was to play a man returning to his hometown of Buzzsaw for his mother's wedding.
- Following disastrous test screenings, Universal Pictures scrapped the film's planned October 1991 release and ordered reshoots, the most prominent change being a frame story in which Courtney Peldon's Marci Campbell tells her school class the film's events, even though her character was absent for many of them.
- Working on Out on a Limb was such an unpleasant experience for director Francis Veber, who had not written the script himself, that he never again directed a film from a script that was not his own.
- Out on a Limb was the first film Matthew Broderick and Jeffrey Jones had starred in together since Ferris Bueller's Day Off, which had been released six years earlier.
