Plot summary
Harry Crumb is the last descendant of the family that founded the Crumb & Crumb detective agency, though the detecting talent skipped him. He has spent ten years at the agency's Tulsa branch, kept away from headquarters. In Beverly Hills, a fashion model named Jennifer Downing is kidnapped, and her rich father, P. J. Downing, asks his friend Eliot Draisen, the agency's president, to take the case. Draisen hands it to Harry, a dedicated detective with a fondness for disguises. At the Downing home Harry meets Jennifer's younger sister Nikki and P. J.'s wife Helen, who is involved with Vince Barnes, her tennis instructor. Then a ransom demand arrives.
